Edo Assembly calls for extension of Voters Registration exercise for one week

Edo State House of Assembly has called for extension of voter registration in the State for a period of one week. The House passed the resolution after the Deputy Speaker of the House, Justin Okonoboh, raised the issue under matters of urgent public importance, lamenting that they are still many Edo indigenes who are willing to vote in the forthcoming governorship election, but they are yet to register due to several problems.

The House urged INEC to make more machines and other registration materials available within the period, urging further that they should embark on sensitization tour of the communities regretting that most people in the rural communities are still not aware that the exercise was going on. The House also called for necessary modalities to distribute the uncollected 400,000 Permanent Voters Cards so as to limit the incident of double registration during the exercise.

Speaker of the House, Elizabeth Ativie, directed the House Committee on Education to liaise with the INEC to ensure compliance with the resolution. Speaker Ativie, who stressed the need for the exercise to be extended for another one week pointed out that the incidence of the voters who were not captured in the exercise cuts across all council areas of the State.
