Gov Emmanuel tasks royal fathers on peace

Uyo—GOVERNOR Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has charged royal fathers to ensure that peace existed in their domains to attract investors and development to the state. Emmanuel spoke, yesterday, while swearing in the new Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs, Obong Effiong Bassey Archianga, the Paramount Ruler of Ibeno Local Government Area, as part of activities marking the annual celebration of the creation of the state. The governor noted that the traditional rulers, as custodians of the people’s cultural values, had significant role to play in maintaining peace and harmony in the society. He said: “As the closest to the people, the traditional rulers are custodians of culture and repositories of wisdom and are critical, particularly to the sustenance of peace and tranquillity in our society. The traditional institution remains a critical institution in our society, and the socio-cultural norms and values embedded in traditional institutions have remained integral parts of every contemporary society. “The traditional rulers are naturally mandated to govern and lead the society effectively as the closest to the people. Your Royal Majesty, the staff of leadership of the State Council of Chiefs, has been transferred to you at a time many people are lining up to invest in our state. You are, therefore, expected to use your office, as a good shepherd, and show direction that will enhance speedy and timely development of our state in line with the dream and vision of this administration, which is out to turn Akwa Ibom to a preferred industrial hub in the Gulf of Guinea. “It is a fact that our programmes and policies on industrialization and job creation will only be achieved when there is peace in our society. Therefore as custodians of peace and order in our villages, clans and areas, I implore you, royal fathers to entrench the ideals of peace and order in your different domains.”
