Battle for Enugu-East Senatorial

The National Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Enugu,yesterday, ordered a re-run of election based on the petition brought before it by candidate of the Peoples Democratic Change,PDC,former governor Chimaroke Nnamani challenging the victory of Senator Gil Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP for the Enugu-East senatorial district, held March 28. Nnamani had approached the tribunal with a petition,which had parties to the suit as Gil Nnaji as first respondent; PDP, second respondent and INEC,third respondent,asking the court to declare him winner,or at the least ,order a re-run following wide spread inflation of results,mutilation and non compliance to the 2010 electoral act that characterized the poll. Delivering verdict on the petition which lasted over 4 hours,Chairman of the 3-man panel,Justice Matthew Adewara of Kwara High Court held that,”accreditation of voters in the election was flawed as confirmed during cross examination of first respondents’ witnesses which affected the outcome of the entire result. Jubilation erupts Thousands of Nnamani supporters who thronged the court room immediately erupted in jubilation over the outcome of the judgment. The jubilant crowd sang supplication songs through major streets of Enugu metropolis.
