VVF centres to be established in six geo-political zones


Guests on Radio Link, a Radio Nigeria Audience Participatory Programme say the establishment of Vesico Vaginal Fistula, VVF centres across the country will increase access to quality medical assistance for the people. 

One of the Guests, who is the Head of Fistula Desk, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Binyerem Ukaire said effort were on to set up centres in the six geopolitical zones of the country. Dr. Ukaire appealed to States and Local Governments to provide policies to support the efforts of the Federal Government to eradicate VVF. 

Another Guest and the Wife of the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Amina Abubakar said a VVF centre would soon be established in the state. Dr. Abubakar urged women with the condition to take advantage of the free treatment in the existing VVF centres in some parts of the country. Also, a Consultant Gynaecologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan Professor Oladosu Ojengbede said effort should be intensified to ensure access to quality primary health care at the grassroots. 

A Caller on the programme, Mr. Chukwuma Evanus from Enugu said governments should put in place sustainable policies to ensure that VVF is eradicated in the country. Ayuba Danlamin from Minna who contributed via E-mail urged wives of other Governors to emulate their Niger State counterpart's effort in tackling VVF. meanwhile, a Guest and Project Manager, Fistula Care Plus Project in Nigeria, Dr Habib Sadauki says family planning could reduce the risk of having VVF. 

Dr Sadauki advised women to embrace child spacing. He advised women who have gone through corrective surgery to abstain from pregnancy for a period of time. On the issue of early marriage, Dr Sadauki suggested close medical supervision to be provided for the girl-child to eliminate the chances of VVF.

  1. Husbands whose wife is facing this kind of challenge should support their wives and assist in locating the the center where the health facility is available and not neglect their them for girlfriends.
